History of Chapter Meetings
The unity, strength and solidarity of a large organization such as Delta Kappa Gamma depend upon conformity with established rules and regulations as well as perpetuation of customs and traditions. Unfortunately, the termites of unwise compromise and insufficient knowledge remain a constant threat to the future of this unique society.
In the official ceremony for founding state organizations, the essentials of continuing success are state:
“You, as officers and members are charged with furthering the social, professional and business phases of Delta Kappa Gamma. Yours is the task of participating in interrelationships with other units, of upholding excellence in chapter programs, of perpetuating customs and traditions of Delta Kappa Gamma.”
Soon after May 11, 1929, the Society established the custom of making its initiations and certain other special meetings in gala occasions.
In Dr. Blanton’s words:
“(Luncheons and banquets have been dignified by tasteful appointments, appropriate dress and well-ordered programs. . . which challenge the ingenuity of the participants.) Accepting the idea that many teachers need a broader social life as a contributing factor to success in active service, (there are those among us who declare that the wardrobe of a Delta Kappa Gamma member is inadequate without a dinner dress,) and that nay chapter is a partial failure if it does not afford opportunities for wearing one.”
Marked by impressive pageantry, there are three meetings each year especially designed to enrich the social experiences of members. These chapter meetings are the initiation, birthday celebration and Founders Day observance.
